Baldrige Surveyors

The Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence provide a systems perspective for understanding performance management. They reflect validated, leading-edge management practices against which an organization can measure itself. With their acceptance nationally and internationally as the model for performance excellence, the Criteria represent a common language for communication among organizations for sharing best practices. The Criteria are also the basis for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award process. We are proud that FAHQ members have been certified as Baldrige Surveyors. FAHQ would like to commend Florida Hospital for its work on reducing ED door-to-doctor time.

The Florida Hospital Orlando team began work on this project in 2006, using lean process and tools. The aim was to decrease ED door-to-doctor time by 25%. They implemented the following changes:

• Used a predictive model for volume and admissions based on the previous four weeks to establish staffing needs
• Reduced lab turnaround time
• Observed and videotaped processes to eliminate waste and non-value-added steps and redesigned physical layout and processes based on this analysis.
• Incorporated lean tools into daily process
• Developed a monthly process council to review metrics and develop an action plan for any areas not meeting goals.

Using this approach, the Florida Hospital Orlando team was able to achieve their goal of reducing door to doctor time by 25% and length of stay in the ED. We commend the team at Florida Hospital Orlando and look forward to update information on this outstanding and ongoing work!

FAHQ would like to commend HCA on its national Clean Hands Are Cool Hands Campaign launched in Florida

In August, HCA launched its national campaign to fight antibiotic resistance infections in the community in Tampa, Florida. This anti-MRSA community campaign was designed for children K-4, teachers and parents, and features teen star Mitchel Musso from the popular Hannah Montana Disney TV show. The program includes PSAs, information for students, parents and teachers, as well as lesson plans, buttons and activities which can be used in the classroom. You can access information on this program by clicking the Clean Hands Are Cool Hands button on all local HCA hospital websites. We applaud this effort to reach out to the community to help control the spread of this challenging disease.
