Best Practices Across the Healthcare Spectrum

April 20-23, 2010

Welcome to the FAHQ Annual Conference webpage. This year our conference focuses on best practices in healthcare quality. Following a nation-wide Call for Participants, presentations were selected from organizations and providers who have made outstanding strides in their care delivery and processes through the use of data-driven strategies.

The Annual Conference runs three-and-a-half days, and includes a wealth of practical information and strategies to improve healthcare quality. Our program starts on April 20th with a pre-conference line-up which includes the 1.5 day CPHQ Review Course, geared to helping quality professionals who are seeking the skills and knowledge necessary to earn the CPHQ designation or providing an update for those who currently hold this highly respected designation. On April 21, we offer two half day workshops: Managing Mischievous Microorganisms and Lean in Healthcare: Improving Hospital Operations. On April 22, we begin our two day Conference with presentations selected from submissions from across the country on best practices in nine areas of healthcare quality.

Registration for each of the pre-conference and the conference programs can be done separately, so attendees can opt to attend one day (workshops), 2 days (conference or CHPQ) or all 3.5 days (CPHQ and Conference)!

THE WORKSHOPS
The morning workshop focuses on a new approach in the healthcare quality arena, Positive Deviance (PD), as a method to reduce MRSA. This interactive workshop will provide practice in the use of PD, a technique which has been shown effective not only in reducing MRSA, but also in improving medication reconciliation, diabetes care and late phase of life care. We are honored to have internationally renowned Dr. Jon Lloyd lead this workshop. Dr. Lloyd has published work on the success of PD in achieving a 50% reduction in MRSA rates in Pittsburg area hospitals, and is currently overseeing studies in infection control in seven facilities under an AHRQ grant. The workshop ends with a presentation on goal directed therapy to prevent sepsis. This is presented by Suzanne Chandler and Dr. Dean Sandifer, who have run a highly successful program. We are excited that Dr. Sandifer, who has been a driving force in quality improvement, is joining Ms. Chandler in this presentation and can field your many questions on how to bring physicians on-board.

The afternoon workshop addresses another area high on your request list: Lean & Six Sigma. Louis Rhodes, a Master Black Belt and conference favorite, has agreed to return this year and run this interactive session on using Lean to improve hospital operations. After presentation of the tools, attendees will assume a role within the Emergency Department of an organization and, under guidance, run actual simulations to assess, improve and then evaluate the effectiveness of the improvements made. A strong emphasis will be placed on learning practical skills which attendees can take back to their workplace.

For the specific Conference agenda, please download our Conference brochure (see link above). We are sure you will be as excited as we are by all the wonderful presentations scheduled. Our Call for Participants produced an amazing level of response, and we only wish we had two more days in our Conference to present more of the excellent work being done in our field!
